Swamp coolers make a great inexpensive option to air conditioners. As their name suggests they can help to combat swamp like temperatures. They can be utilized both indoors and out when relief from high temperatures is needed. They are eco friendly and can be made in ways which don’t always rely on the use of electricity. This is ideal when the circuits are overloaded or when electricity simply isn’t an option. When home made swamp coolers do run off electricity the costs are far lower than air conditioning.

Car battery engines and solar panels can run swamp coolers outdoors, and indoors home made versions can run off a simple household fan. The basic concept of a swamp cooler is cold air being blown over cold water or wet items to produce a water evaporating system which then lowers the temperature. Solar fan hats, available for outdoors in hot climates, work on the same principle.

One of the cheapest swamp coolers to make simply involves buying a Styrofoam cool box and inserting a round hole in the lid. Next insert a small fan, facing down into the hole. An air vent in the form of a simple pipe needs to also be inserted into the box. The fan then blows cold air onto bottles of iced water in the box and cooling air evaporates through the pipe vent for instant cooling. When the iced water melts simply replace with new bottles and cool down even more by the drinking the refreshing melted iced water which was in the box.

The main problem with swamp coolers indoors is they tend to look rather unattractive and may appear unsightly to the woman of the house. An excellent way of dealing with this is to hang a light net curtain which is soaked in water and place the fan behind it. Put a bucket of ice in front of the fan, but not visible through the curtain, and the dual effect of the ice in the bucket and the wet net will work a treat without becoming an ugly focus of attention.

It isn’t necessary to use ice as water will also work in a swamp cooler. Whether ice or water is chosen the effectiveness can be increased by wrapping the chosen container, be it a box or a bucket, in aluminium tin foil.

Fans can be used as swamp coolers outdoors by rigging water pipe systems into them, which are then connected to a solar panel. However it is best to take advice on the correct technique to do this as placing water pipes into a fan by the unitiated, is best avoided. It is better to be safe and follow a printed diagram or take electrical advice.

A ready supply of water or ice is all you need to keep a swamp cooler running, plus electricity if not using solar or car batteries. Not only are they cheap to make but the beauty is swamp coolers are also cheap to run, saving a packet on the high running costs of air conditioning.
