The best thing about fall are the colors. The transformation from green to the gold, red, brown and yellow hues of the season is something to look forward too, but we don’t need to leave all this beauty outside. It’s fun to bring some of this autumn color inside as well.
Years ago, housewives made the start of every season an event. This was not only the time to wash windows and walls, and clean woodwork, it was the time to change out the room for the coming season. In September, we started out by changing the drapes or other window treatments for the fall. Depending on your color scheme, add some fall color to your windows using the colors of autumn. Gold, maroon, rust, yellow and brown are good choices, and will complement other fall decorations that you choose.
Change out the pillows and throws on your furniture. Using some of the same colors, or those that will compliment your furniture, add some throw pillows and a cozy afghan or quilt. Pillows are available with leaf patterns or other fall themes, or you can make your own. The trend for fall is toward cozy.
If you use area or throw rugs, let them match the season as well. Choose ones with deep greens, reds or gold designs. Find some autumn prints for your walls. If you don’t want to invest a lot of money, you can find these at discount and thrift stores. Look for scenes of fall trees or harvest scenes.
A wooden bowl, or a decorative basket filled with Indian corn, gourds, or mini pumpkins makes a good decoration. If you don’t want to use natural materials, you can purchase these in plastic, cloth, or even glass, and keep them year after year.
Nothing says fall more than the autumn leaves themselves. Silk and other fall leaves, in every color, can be purchased separately, or in garlands, for decorating wall hangings, mirrors and doorways. Autumn is harvest time, and you can even find mini bales of straw to create a natural country look. Set out some harvest baskets of apples, or a pot of mums on your coffee table, hearth, or somewhere on the floor.
Get some candles, in your fall colors, with fall fragrances of spice, pumpkin, or apples to add to your décor. Just be sure you keep them away from your straw bales.
Every season has its advantages, and certainly one of the biggest in the fall are the colors, the textures, and the crispness of autumn.
